It should be noted that, sometimes puffy eyes are due to a disease, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism that with treating it, the puffiness of the eyes will disappear without any eyelid surgery. In these cases, you can treat the puffy eyes by treating the disease.

Occasionally, drooping of the upper eyelids are so severe that can restrict and limit normal vision of the individual. In such cases, eyelid surgery is one of the best ways to give the normal vision to the person again.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is appropriate for people who are at least 35 years old, and excess skin of upper eyelids or bagginess of lower eyelids has caused unpleasant changes in their faces. One should be healthy and has no particular disease to undergo this surgery. In addition, the person should have reasonable expectations of eyelid surgery.

Depending on the structure of subcutaneous tissue and excess skin, eyelid surgery takes about an hour, but if another surgery is to be done too, it will last longer. After eyelid surgery, it takes about an hour for the person to come round, and most people are discharged after 4-5 hours of admission.

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Usually, In eyelid surgery, by removing a part of the excess skin of the upper eyelid, you can correct the droopy eyelid of the person. This surgery also can reduce the bagginess by removing fat deposits and excess skin under the eyes. Eyelid surgery can ultimately result in a refreshed and younger eye area.

In eyelid surgery, first, surgical incisions are made along the eyelid crease and lash line. By making the incisions, the excess skin in the upper part of the eye becomes visible, and by removing the excess fat deposits, the excess skin under the eye becomes visible, so these excess skins are removed. Finally, the skin is closed with tiny stitches in order to leave no trace of incision, that in most cases they do not leave.

Sometimes removing fat is enough to eliminate the puffiness of under eye bags, and there is no need for the excess skin to be removed. In these cases, main incisions are made and only the fat deposits are removed.

After eyelid surgery, the patient will have a slight blurred vision and may be unable to close his or her eyes completely for several days. These issues will be resolved after a few days, and the patient will be fully recovered.

In the first few days after eyelid surgery, the patient must use cold compresses and artificial tears. In these days, he or she may experience dry eyes because the eyes do not fully close. Also, wounds should be washed with sterile water to prevent infection. After two or three days, boiled water can be used in stead of sterilized water.

Important Points about Eyelid Surgery

As a result, they should be careful about choosing the right specialist and surgeon in blepharoplasty to avoid side effects of this surgery. These side effects include eye infections, blurred vision due to bleeding, double vision in some cases, placement of the eyelid in the wrong position, and visible stitch line and scarring.
